Marching Band Handbook**
Section I: Marching Band Attendance Policy
Marching band conflicts must be given at least one week in advance of the date of the conflict.* Any conflict not communicated one week in advance will result in the student losing privileges. Every student is provided with one forgiven absence per year, assuming the absence is an approved one. A good example of this is a doctor's appointment that slipped your mind. Loss of privileges can include but are not limited to, losing 3rd quarter privileges, not performing the pre-game and/or show at the football game, or not performing at a competition as determined by the director. This decision was not made lightly but in order to support the success and safety of the group, we need all students at rehearsal and we need good communication to plan for when that is not possible.
Addendum: Student absences will be handled a bit differently this year. Students will be responsible for submitting their absence/lateness on the absence request form which can be found in the "about" tab of our classroom page in advance of their absence. It is at the discretion of the director to decide if they will contact the parents to verify any absence requests.
*Unexcused absences and lateness do NOT include unforeseeable emergencies like illnesses or funerals or natural disasters. These are of course impossible to foresee and give notice for.
Section II: Marching Band Attire Guidelines
Guideline I: Clothing
Students are expected to wear their show shirt, show shoes, long black socks, and athletic or compression shorts. Jeans and cargo shorts are not acceptable and negatively affect the appearance of the uniform.
Guideline II: Jewelry
Jewelry may not be worn with the uniform (no earrings, necklaces, or rings). Watches and bracelets are acceptable but only if they are concealed by the uniform’s gauntlets.
Guideline III: Hair
(Winds/Percussion) Longer hair must be worn up into the shako (hat)/beret. Please bring pins or hair
ties as necessary.
(Guard) Do as instructed by the guard staff for the current version of the show. Please bring pins or hair
ties as necessary.
** Failure to follow any of the above guidelines may result in the deviant student not performing at the event or other consequences at the discretion of the director.
